Taking "luggage" on the trains?

We are taking the TGV from Paris to Dijon and a non-high-speed train on to Beaune, where we will spend the night. Can we take a large tote bag (not a suitcase with a wheels) on the train, or do we have to check it in as luggage?

Thanks,
Veronica

You don't usually check your luggage on a train, you take it with you. They have extra racks to use near the fronts of each car, or you can put it on the rack over your seat. Some trains have a space behind the seats to put suitcases. If you do use the extra rack provided, make sure you sit where you can keep an eye on it. It doesn't happen often, but people do steal suitcases occasionally. Some people use cable locks to lock the suitcase to the rack.

Thanks, Jo! As you can tell, I'm a "newbie" at this!

I've done this route!! Beaune is gorgeous. Wine caves everywhere and the food was amazing!

There's lots of room on the train, so a good rule of thumb is that if you can carry it you can take it. (Some restrictions apply to bicycles, though.)

Hi you can easily take luggage on the train. It is a good idea to have a way to attach your bag to the overhead rack for safety purposes. We used our back pack waist belts but a carbiner would work well too. Just a little something to make it harder to steal.

Since I'm a solo traveler, I put my bag in the overhead, lock the zippers, and then use a cable lock to lock the bag to the overhead. This way, if I need to use the loo, or want to get a drink, I don't have to drag my bag with me.

If there are two of you, then one can watch the bags while the other goes to do whatever it is they need to do.

I would still use something to make it less opportunistic for someone to get to your bag.
