Taking Cameras in Spanish Museums

For folks who have been to the big Spanish Museums: Prado/Escorial/Palaces etc...
Im reading in Ricks books and web pages that while bags are checked at the Prado, many say cameras are ok to take into the museum (despite the no camera signs). Im not one of those tourists flashing up the whole place - but I didnt want to leave my Nikon in checked backpack if possible (are the lockers locked and we keep the key?). Assuming I just take it with me and not use it inside - will they allow that? Just curious as I plan to use it outside later that day and didnt want to go back to hotel!

Some places don't allow pictures. Others sell a photo pass (Cologne Cathedral did this). Others will let you take pictures so long as no flash. And others you can take photos and even use a flash. The only way to know for sure is ask at each place.

I haven't been to a place yet that wouldn't let me bring my camera at all, even if there was no pictures. If you run into this, ask if they have a safe place to store your camera.

Hello,

Just returned from Spain. At the Prado you have to check your bag with a person who gives you a number, like a coat check. I seem to remember having to put my camera in the backpack. At El Escorial you have to put the backpack in a locker, but I carried my camera around. At the Royal Palace in Madrid we had to lock up the bag, but we could take our camera. For these instances I have locks attached to the zippers on my backpack in case I have to check it with a person; that way I am assured no one will steal anything from my pack.

Thanks all - I appreciate the info. Good idea on the lock Robert - I forgot I carry one around for that purpose! Thanks for reminding me to USE it!
