We are traveling from Bacharach in the Rhine Valley to Dusseldorf for a flight to Stcckholm. Can we go by river boat in a day or overnight or are we better off by train. And how do we do that? We have plane reservations and can't change too easily. Any help appreciated.

I hope you're not using RyanAir, because Ryan doesn't fly from Düsseldorf. They fly from a remote airport in a town called Weeze, which is only accessible by bus. What time is your flight from Düsseldorf? I don't know of any boats from Bacharach all the way to Düsseldorf - certainly not any overnight ones. There is a K-D boat that leaves Bacharach at 11:15 and only gets aas far as Köln by 20:00 (8 pm). The train would probably be your best way to get there. There are train connections from Bacharach to Düsseldorf airport (DUS) in about 2½-3 hrs.
