Hi planning a trip in June end 4 adults with 4 children age 3 to 8. 2 nights in zermatt, 3 nights in Lucerne and 1 night in Zurich . Any suggestions for a better itinerary ? Which are the best hotels to stay in these areas considering kids.
Dear Sameer, if you can stay 3 nights in Zermatt you could find an apartment or 2 small apartments in the same building. It would be much less expensive than a hotel and you would have more space. I did a search on Zermatt.ch in the "holiday apartments" and lots of them came up for a 3-night stay beginning 16 June, but of course your dates are probably different. This was one of them: http://www.perren-reinhold.ch/houses/enandorra.htm And the same company has other apartments in other buildings. Andorra was 570 CHF total for 3 nights for an apartment for 2 adults and 2 children. You could ask them what they have open for your dates and say you have 8 people total. You could also think of staying in the Berner Oberland, say in Wengen, instead of Zermatt. It is closer to Lucerne and a very nice village with beautiful views of the mountains. so is Murren.
Hi Sameer, Where is your arrival point in Switzerland? Seems that you are departing from Zurich, correct? My opinion, the Berner Oberland is more scenic than Zermatt, even with the Matterhorn. If I had 6 nights to spend in Switzerland, I'd do 3 nights in the Berner Oberland, 2 nights in Lucerne and a night in Zurich. Depending on your flight time out of Zurich, you could possibly spend your last night in Lucerne and train to the airport from here. If that's the case, I'd add a night in the Berner Oberland... 4 nights BO (we loved Wengen as a base in the BO) and 2 in Lucerne. Paul
One morre thing-did you know the Swiss tourist board has written a travel guide just for visitors from India? It is called "Switzerland for Movie Stars" and while it is aimed at the Indian film industry, there is lots of good information for tourists, like hotels, vegetarian restaurants, transport services, etc. You might take a look: http://www.filmlocation.ch/uploads/indian_films.pdf I found a color printer to print it out because the photos are so nice. but it will give you names and contact information for hotels in the area you decide to stay in. Also, do know your children will travel on the trains and boats for free with a Family Card? Each family will need one; you can't all be on the same card.
Paul has very very good advice for you, and I agree totally with him that the Berner Oberland is much more beautiful than Zermatt. Head to the Lauterbrunnen Valley (just past Interlaken) high up into the Swiss Alpine villages of Murren or Wengen. With kids the first place I would contact would be the Denise at the Chalet Fontana to enquire about her apartment. It would be perfect for you. Don't forget that your kids travel free with you all over Switzerland wherever you go. Wonderful Wonderful country.
Thanks a lot for the info. This will help. Any suggestion on train vs drive ?
You have 8 people with luggage? Good luck trying to find a rental car to hold all of that ;-) Yes, of course, take the train!!! 1) One of the best transports systems in the world 2) Your kids travel everywhere with you on public transport for free
3) High Alpine Villages are car-free 4) All of your destinations are serviced easily by train, cogwheel, gondola, etc
Sameer,
I agree with the other posts and highly recommend the Berner Oberland. We did this last summer with my two boys, age 2 and 5. They loved it and still talk about the trip, so we are going back again next year. Lauterbrunnen, Murren, and Wengen are all nice places to stay in that area. Definitely plan on train travel. It is very easy and convenient. When in Lucerne, make sure to go to the Transportation Museum. It is outstanding, my kids loved it. www.verkehrshaus.ch Mike
