Switzerland transportation pass?

Is there a pass you can purchase for all the lifts, funiculars, etc. without buying point to point tickets in the Berner Oberland area? If so, any idea how much they cost?

I believe that there is a pass called the Berner Oberland Regional Pass, but I'm not 100% sure if it works on ALL forms of transportation. In addition, I believe that the minimum duration of the pass is 7 days. So if you are staying in the Berner Oberland area for 3 or 4 days, it may not be worthwhile buying this pass.

I may have a pamphlet for this pass somewhere at home. I'll look for it tonight and post an update if I can find it.

There is the Swiss Pass and the BO pass. You can get details on both by selecting the "railpasses" tab at the top of this page.

This area has to be looked at carefully for passes. As the transport is usually privately owned. For me this summer the swiss half pass worked best for our itin. in the berner oberland (also good for buses there) and the rest of our Switzerland train travel.

I don't think we will do much rail travel through Switzerland, just from the airport in Zurich to the Berner Oberland. We plan to stay in Gimmelwald for 4 nights and wonder what type of transport is the most cost effective for the alps.

We stayed in Gimmelwald back in 2005 and only hiked to Murren twice and took the funicular from Murren up to?? I can't remember...but it was beautiful. Our daughter had surgery on her leg 6 months before our visit and she just couldn't hike very much at all. We were too cheap to spend much on lifts (a big mistake) and I don't want to make the same mistake again. She will go with us again and may have difficulty hiking (due to CP) but I know she will try her best.

Thanks for the information! Just want to be prepared.

Susan,
I just returned from that region and you refer to the funicular between Muerren and Allmendhubel which is just stunning. I used a swiss pass which covered all transportation up to Muerren, and then allowed discounts between Muerren and Allmendhubel and Muerren and the Schilthorn cable car. We went to Grindelwald and took the cable car from there to First which was very nice, and walked to the the lake there. The scenery on the hike is just spectacular but may be differcult for your daughter as the path is very undulating. But just going up to First was nice enough. The view from Grindelwald is quite different from Muerren and well worth the time in my opinion. Grindelwald is also covered with the SP.
