Wondering if while staying in wengen it is worth while to go to lichthenstein?
If its to check off one more country only you know how valuable that is to you. There is, as previously stated, virtually no other decent reason to go there.
I wouldn't leave Wengen to go anywhere!
If you are thinking a day trip...no. It is a bit of a drive and not worth the effort. To go there for a night or something makes more sense, but I still would not choose to do it. My father always wanted to visit Lichtenstein, and so we made a point of going on our first trip to Europe. Since then, I have driven through the country 3 times. (all 3 times it was traveling from Austria to Switzerland so it was on the way) While the tiny country is a novelty, I would never give up time in the Berner Oberland to see it. I am sure there is more to the country than what my quick drives through have shown me, but I have never regretted giving up time there to get to the Lauterbrunnen valley. With limited time, I would skip it. (My opinion, of course, it is your trip. So if you are like my dad...you may have to go and decide for yourself)
I would only recommend Liechtenstein if you have business there or if you're going to be driving by anyway. It looks virtually indistinguishable from the areas of Austria and Switzerland it borders. For me, the novelty of being in a tiny country wore off after about 10 minutes of driving.
Hi Cheryl, Nothing new here... our very first night in Europe was in Liechtenstein (Triesenberg). We spent the equivelent of nearly a day in total in Liechtenstein. Same trip we stayed 4 nights in Wengen. I don't think there's anyplace I'd give up time in Wengen (and the Berner Oberland in general) to go visit. After trips to Switzerland, many to Austria, Bavaria, etc., there's nothing "new" to see by visitng Liechtenstein. Paul
We have been to many special places in Europe. Liechtenstein was not among them. I can't think of ANY other place we've spent time in in Europe that I would subtract time from to see L. It's not ugly. It's just....nothing. At least nothing remotely better than anything surrounding it.
My wife has corrected me. She reminds me that we did stop once as we passed through to eat at a McDonalds. She remembers that the bathrooms were clean. Of course if you want that, there's a McDonalds in Luzern which is closer. And one in Interlaken which is much closer.
Thank you all for your input. I have checked off Lichthenstein. Have decided not worth it to take time from the many things we want to do and see in Switzerland. Thanks again as always. Cheryl
Wengen is my favorite spot and Gimmelwald across the valley is #2. If you must leave Wengen go to Lauterbrunnen and take the transport up to connect another and visit Murren. You will get a spectacular view..just opposite of the one from Wengen. At age 74 I hiked from Gimmelwald to Murren. I'd rather do that than leave for another part of the country.
