Planning trip to Switzerland then on to Italy. Late Oct. Leave from San Francisco Undecided where to go in Switzerland. Plan to train to Milan Italy. Rental car in Italy return home from Venice. Any suggestions? Two of us in our 60's. Been to Venice and drove to Rome once.

How late in October? the Swiss are running another 4+1 special on the Swiss Pass, but it starts on November 1. (Buy 4 days, get 1 free). Only on first-class passes, though, which are not necessary in Switzerland. Also, you can get excellent discount prices on the trip Zurich to Milan or Spiez to Milan on th edirect Eurocity trains by buying 2-3 minths in advance on SBB. zurich to Milan is 27 CHF instead of 86 (you can also pick this train up with a start from Luzern); spiez to Milan is 27 CHF instead of 76. These fares are non-changeable and non-refundable.

Thanks for your suggestions to my question about trip to Switzerland and Italy. Plan to go last two weeks of October. Thinking two weeks should be enough time for this trip. ??? Is the currency used in Switzerland the same as Italy (euro)?

Re. currency, no - Switzerland uses Swiss Francs while Italy uses Euros. Go to Zermatt and stay a few days to see the Matterhorn and go up on the cog railway. You can get on and off to walk around or to the next station.
Expensive place but worth it!
