This summer I'm traveling to Switzerland before meeting up with my family in Italy. Taking Rick Steves' advice I definitely want to go to the Murren/Wengen/Gimmelwald region outside of Interlaken but I'm not sure which town to stay in! I will be traveling alone so I'm wondering if Gimmelwald will be to quiet for a solo traveller and therefore I should be looking into Murren. Any advice? Thanks!
I have been to the area several times with family, but if I were traveling on my own I would say at Chalet Fontana in Mürren, a nice little B&B where you can meet others for hiking, etc. Second choice would be the Mountain Hostel in Gimmelwald.
Gimmelwald is a very quiet, quaint small town with no restaurants or stores. There are restaurants, stores and more lodging in Muerren. You can walk down the hill, or take the cable car, from Muerren to Gimmelwald. In Rick Steves' tour book he has a walking tour of Gimmelwald. Since you are travelling solo, you may want to visit, or stay, at the hostel in Gimmelwald. Lots of people to talk to and maybe take hikes with. The hostel has a nice outside patio that overlooks the valley where they serve lunch. There is also a "sleep in the hay" accommodation in Gimmelwald, if you're interested. In Muerren, we stay at Hotel Alpina which has aweseome balcony views of the Jungfrau and the valley below. Your budget may determine which town you stay in. Swiss lodging is very expensive.
