Switzerland Question

My husband and I are leaving for Europe in less than two weeks(volcano permitting). We will be in the Bernese Oberland for the second half of our trip. We're staying in an apartment in Murren. If possible we'd like to hike most of the time. I want to pack as little as possible and I'm wondering what the dress code is for the restaurants in that area? Are hiking pants and boots ok? What are your suggestions for what to pack? Thanks!

I don't think I've EVER seen anybody dressed up with suite/tie anywhere in Mürren during my several stays there. I have seen people in shorts, jeans and khakis. I really don't think you have to worry about it.

Hiking clothes are OK anywhere in Mürren, but I wouldn't wear hiking boots for dining inside. The Swiss generally take off their hiking boots before going into their homes or hotels, and appreciate it if you do too. Presumably you are taking a second pair of shoes to wear when you are not hiking?

As for what to pack---when we go there to hike, I pack half as much casual clothing as I would usually take for travel, plus my hiking clothes---one pair each of shorts (or lightweight capris) and long pants; two lightweight shortsleeve "performance" tees (quick-drying polyester), one longsleeve tee (Patagonia capilene), one microfleece jacket, and a rain jacket.

Thanks for your help everyone! Hopefully we'll get some nice weather for hiking.
