Switzerland mountains weather

Has anyone been there recently? How is the weather on mountains? Do you need heavy jacket and snow gear?

"Has anyone been there recently? How is the weather on mountains?" Haven't been there recently, but I have been there many times at different seasons of the year.

"Do you need heavy jacket and snow gear?" Depends on what exactly you plan to do. If you plan to spend hours at a time in the elements on the very peaks of the mountains, yes, you might need some heavy winter clothes. If like most tourists, you plan to ascend on a gondola, funicular or train, take in the view for a little while then go back down, you will not need heavy winter clothes. This should be enough- a warm jacket or fleece with a sweater or sweatshirt underneath, wool socks, gloves (don't have to be heavy-duty winter gloves) a hat and a scarf. +/- thermal underpants, depending on your tolerance for cold weather (but if it's warm in the valley, you'll sweat uncomfortably before you reach the summit).

At the lower elevations, where the mountain villages and resorts are located, the weather will be spring-like, if slightly cooler than the valley floor. More important here is preparing to stay dry. Storms are frequent, intense, and begin with little warning.

I was in Wengen last late last July,, it was lovely warm weather all across Europe,, including Wengen.. but when we went hiking above Wengen there were still snow patches in places and we wore( and needed) a fleece jacket with a windbreaker on top.. That was in July. Our hotel said some of the trails were still snow covered in June that year..

I don't know exactyly where in Alps you are going,, but I would bring a good jacket, gloves, and have good walking or light hiking type shoes.. this assumes you are not really doing any major hiking, just some sightseeing hiking.

I was in Murren in early May last summer - the most I ever wore, even on a rainy cool hike down from Mannlichen, was a tshirt, long sleeved shirt and medium weight jacket.

always use layers - thsirt- long or sweater and something water proof (gortex shell etc). If youre always cold - then put on extra shirt or layer underneith. Id highly recommend some merino wool (Icebreaker) or similar. Remember if youre hiking you will warm up from the activity. Sun rain fog cool warm - you may get it all so dress/gear-up accordingly but keep it light!
