In September, I am flying into Zurich and planning to take the train to Lake Constance for two nights before returning to Zurich. I can’t seem to find a reasonable priced hotel/hostel/pension for one person (under $100 a night). Does anyone have a suggestion on where to stay? I was thinking of staying in Konstanze, Meersburg or Lindau. Thanks.
I would defnitely stay on the northern shore as the view to the southern side is much, much more spectacular than the other way around. Meersburg's view is not as spectacular yet, it starts getting really good from Friedrichshafen to Lindau. Friedrichshafen is a great hub, speed boats to Konstanz, regular boats to any other town, ferry boat to Romanshorn, Switzerland and train connection to Ravensburg and Weingarten for the baroque churches and convent. Try www.seehotelfn.de for a great hotel with walking distance to the train station and best view of the lake and the alpine background panorama.
Hi, the hotel you suggested was full but I was able to find a hostel - Graf Soden Haus in Friedrichshafen. Anyone stay there?
Never stayed there but I know the area. It's q calm residential area on a hill but there is one larger thru-street cutting thru it. There are pedestrian bridges for easy crossing of that street. From there its about a 10-15mins walk to the lakefront gardens but there's also some kind of beach nearby. Also from that place to downtown you pass the Restaurant Lukullum (closed on Mondays) which is really, really good!
If the hyperlink doesn't work try www.lukullum.de and click thru for the pictures...
Is the hostel walking distance from the ferry landing? I will be coming from Zurich and the map wasn't very clear. Any other suggestions?? Thanks so much for the ideas.
How are you planning on traveling from Zurich to Friedrichshafen? You could take the speed boat from Constance to Friedrichshafen but unlike the Seehotel that hostel is a bit of a walk from the Landing. Maybe you should check www.friedrichshafen.de for other hotels/hostels that are closer to the harbour...
we have stayed at the city hotel crone and also the goldenes rad (i think that one is a best western). not sure of the current cost. if you don't have a car, it's nice to stay near the lakefront.
Darn it. I reserved a room at the hostel already. How far a walk are we talking? The write up didn't mention the walk being far...
Enter the address of the hotel in Google Earth. Then zoom out until you can see the harbor, too. Then use the measuring tool to find out how many km or miles the distance is. A taxi from the harbor to the hostel is not gonna be more than €10... Probably even more on the €5 side of it. It would be a beautiful walk all along the embankment to the hostel. Probably some 10-15 mins.
