Switzerland itinerary, updated, thoughts?

Hi everyone
Thanks to your thoughts and messages, my Switzerland itin is starting to take shape. At this stage I think we will have roughly 5-7 days in Switzerland. at this stage our rough itin. looks like this:

(coming from Paris)...
Train to Lyon and pick up car.
Overnight Chamonix.
Chamonix to Zermatt. Lunch Sion? Sierre? (I went to Sion last time and had a fabulous hike)
Zermatt (cable cars etc to summit of Klein Matterhorn, done it before but my partner hasnt, and I loved it)
Zermatt (Gornerschlucht? The lower end!)
Zermatt - Lauterbrunnen (stay Murren)3 nights and then back to France.

it would be nice to have more time, and we are planning to book accom as we go, so we may end up staying longer. I could spend the whole holiday in Switzerland!!
Any suggestions re itinerary tweaks, accommodation, things to see and do appreciated.

Thanks again

Cathy

The big change I notice is that you're sleeping in Murren instead of Interlaken--good move.

That move was thanks to someone on this site, once I looked up Murren, I was sold!!!

Yeah, I saw that on the prior thread. One of our lineup of stud travel advisors helped you, so you owe him a beer, maybe he'd like to collect it down under (hmmm, that was open to interpretation), what I meant to say was the he might like to come to Austrialia to collect his beer, he's asked me to negotiate the deal and I'm thinking, what commish do I get on a beer?

I dont think you get much commission on a beer, maybe he has to bring you in his suitcase!!

My main observation is that at two of your destinations (at least) a car will be of no use to you - Zermatt and Murren. Are you sure you need a car? We spent two weeks in Switzerland and while a car would have changed the vistas a bit, we managed fine (and probably saved a bit of money) with trains and city public transport. We never really felt that we sould have had a car instead of rail passes. In fact, "catching the train" may have gotten us moving a little faster in the morning than just getting in the car would have.

Yes, absolutely see your point re a car, but Switzerland is just one leg of our trip... and we decided on a car for France and Switzerland to give us a break from trains... and for the experience of driving (gulp) in Europe.
