Switzerland itinerary help

We want to include about 4 days for Munich in our itinerary, making the Swiss part about 8-9 days. We will be using trains, will include Lucerne, but are open to suggested itineraries. Our only limitation would be that we can't see a different city or locale every night, just too exhausting, so perhaps 2 or 3 of the best? We like culture, light hiking, boats and trains, vistas, and maybe some fondue and a summer toboggan run. All suggestions are appreciated!

Judy, it looks like you have about 14 days on the ground, right? Where are you flying into and out of? Have you been to Europe before and taken the trains? The Bernese Oberland area of Switzerland, in the Swiss Alps, has wonderful vistas, hiking and is overflowing with Swiss culture. I stay at the Hotel Alpina in the quaint, car-free town of Muerren. Pick up the Rick Steves' Switzerland book and read about this area and others. There's lots of info on what to do, where to go and where to stay. You might also want to consider staying in Lucerne or the Appenzell region of Switzerland. Lucerne is a smaller city situated on the lake with the Alps surrounding it. You can take day trips, which involves a funicular and a cable car, up to Mt. Titlis or Mt. Pilatus. Since you are travelling by train, familiarize yourself with the Deutsche Bahn website. You can access it under "Favorite Links" at the top of this website. Print off possible train schedules and take them with you to purchase tickets. Come back with some more specifics on your trip and we can help you with Munich.
