I will be travelling to Switzerland in late September for 2 nights and am trying to narrow where to stay (Lauterbrunnen, Luzern, Interlaken, etc) and any hotel suggestions would be great as well (Hoping to spend under 200$US/night, but am flexible). We will be traveling from Paris. We want to do mainly hiking and sightseeing, so any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, we are heading to Italy after and wondering if we should go to Venice first or Rome? Thanks in advance for any help!
Tanya, Could you clarify whether your two nights includes travel time from Paris? The trip will likely take at least six hours, probably TGV to Basel and then transfer to local trains. Lauterbrunnen would be a good choice if you want to see both sides of the valley, and it will also facilitate your journey to Italy as travel time to Interlaken is a bit shorter. You can easily get from there to Mürren, Gimmelwald or other places for hiking. I'd suggest checking with hotels well in advance, as some close about Sept. / Oct. to get ready for ski season. One hike that's fairly easy and scenic is the trip on the Allmend-Hubel Funicular from Mürren and then hike back down. There are a couple of Bars/Hotels up there, so you can stop for a "cool one" along the way. Happy travels!
