We are going to Switzerland for only 6 days in September. Looking for a good central location (hub?) from which we can take day trips (or overnight trips) to other parts of Switzerland.
I suppose Bern is the most central city in the country. But it not really practical to base yourself in one place in Switzerland. Even though it's a small country and they have an excellent transportation system, the rugged terrain makes it time consuming to get from place to place. If you want to explore the Alps better to base yourself in one the Berner Oberland locales like: Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Murren, Wengen, Grindelwald, or Gimmelwald. If you're looking to explore the cities Bern is a good choice.
Thank you. Oops, I see I titled this Switzerland in "October". I meant September
Six days is not much time. Probably want to check out the Alps, so as mentioned above you should base a few days in Berner Oberland. Lauterbrunnen and Murren are both great. The train system is impressive. You can get from Lauterbrunnen to Bern in a little more than an hour, and you can get all the way to Luzern from Lauterbrunnen in 2 1/2 hours. Assuming you are flying out of Zurich, you don't need to spend your last night in Zurich, unless your flight is really early. If you have a 10am or later flight, you can easily sleep in Luzern or Bern the night before your flight and catch an early train to the airport.
