Switzerland in November for 4 days

Hi Everyone,
Since we (wife & I) are visiting london in november, we are also planning on visting switzerland for 4 days (Nov 17th - Nov 21).
What would be a good central place to stay at given the weather that time of the year. We mainly want to see the scenery & the peaks, Pilatus, rigi etc.
Since switzerland is super expensive & we are on a tight budget, can we find a hotel for around $80 - $100/night. The most we want to spend is $1000-$1200 for everything(Hotels,Transportation, food, sightseeing) for 4 nights. Is this do-able?

Since a swiss rail pass costs $365 for the both of us, should we be buying a 4-day swiss rail pass? I was thinking that if the weather goes bad then at least i could hop onto a train & see the scenery.

Thanks a lot.

November is off-season for Switzerland. A lot of the hotels/B&Bs in the small mountain towns will be closed for the season. If what you are most interested in is peaks and scenery, you should stay in Interlaken and explore the Jungfrau and Schiltorn area. In November it should be very easy to find accommodation within you budget. Check out this site www.interlaken.ch The 4 day swiss pass is a must, it covers all inter-city trains, all municipal transit systems, and free entry to most museums. Trains and cable cars to the high peaks are discounted at 50%.

November is right in the middle of "Shoulder" season (mid-October to mid-December) when, as mentioned above, most mountain and village hotels and shops shut down. It's the break between summer and winter skiing. For the four days you are there, a Swiss pass may be breakeven if you are out on the train each day. It could be valuable if you are going to go up to the Jungfraujoch or Shilthorn. Passes will only get you a 50% discount on those trips ($134 full fare round trip and $85 full fare round trip respectively). If you are not on the train each of the four days, it may not be worth it. We were there four days and we bought the Swiss 1/2 fare card for about $160 for both of us. We went on the Glacier Express, went up to the Jungfraujoch and up to the Shilthorn. Overall, we saved about $85 over buying tickets without a pass.

I agree with Michael, the Alps are worth a visit at any time of year, but amenities are much sparcer in the shoulder season. Interlaken (which I think tends to be a bit unfairly maligned in this forum) is a good choice. Enjoy the fondue and don't be too shocked by your bill afterwards...
