Switzerland in Late March

I am in the early stages of planning a trip to Switzerland for March 20-27, and was hoping to get a sense of what the weather would be like then. I assume it could vary from a cold snap to fairly pleasant weather like anywhere else in spring, but for the most part I'm thinking it will be cold.

Is snow typically on the ground all over the place or mostly located in higher elevations? Does it melt and get everything messy around that time of year?

Any places better to go to than others?

I have no problem with the weather, just trying to get a feel for Switzerland.

Thanks!

It's difficult to make an accurate general statement about the weather in "Switzerland."

If you're asking about the Alpine areas, then carefully read Tom's advice, which is spot on (as usual).

The weather "in Switzerland" is dependent on the particular elevation you're at. It will be 30 degrees colder at the top of the Jungfrau than it is 8000 feet lower in the Lauterbrunnen valley.

This website is the best I've found for getting an accurate idea of the likely weather more than two weeks out, input location and a time span and you'll get data.

I assume you mean the Alpine areas of Switzerland. Late March is usually the end of the ski season. Your hiking options, if any, will be limited to a couple of mud-soaked trails at lower elevations. My advice? Unless you're a skier, pick another country to visit in March, or else wait until late May when the hiking trails clear up.

I don't want to go up into the Alps, ski, or hike. Would any of the cities like Bern, Lausanne, or Lucerne be worth visiting? (I believe they are all not located on a mountain)

"Worth visiting" is a value judgment that depends on the individual traveler: what might be worth it to me might not be to you, or vice versa. So for what it's worth, I'd say yes (but it depends partly on your alternatives).

We can have everyone vote on it and let you know, but in that case you have to commit to doing what we say.:)

In your OP you asked specifically about the weather at these locations during that time frame, and I'd make the same suggestion as before--click the link provided in my first post and you'll know as much as, or more than, anyone here about the typical weather at those locations during that time frame.

By late March, your chances of getting snowed under in Swiss cities is low. Unless Switzerland experiences an extrordinary winter, snow usually does not continuously accumulate throughout the colder months in the cities (unlike in the mountains). You get a storm, and the snow cover usually partially or completely melts before the next storm. So by late March in a city, you may encounter the melted snow and slush of a recent storm, but not the accumulation of an entire winter's snowfall.

Jonathan,

I was able to drive from Verona to Strasbourg via Luzern in mid-March last year with no trouble at all. I love Luzern and think you would enjoy a couple of days there. If you are flying in (say to Zurich), you can then take trains to the towns you want to visit in addition to Luzern. Meiringen is a great little town on the Bruenig line. As long as you have cold-weather clothing, you should be fine.
