I am travelling through Switzerland by car, and plan to take the Glacier Express, from Zermatt to St. Moritz. Since it's not a round trip, how to I get back to St. Moritz from Zermatt? I don't want to take the express 2 times. Where is it best to leave my car and what are the best price to stay overnight? Thanks, Gabriele
short of personal jet pack I can't think of any other way other than train. Near Zermatt to St Moritz is possible to connect by car but yours will be parked at the other end. You don't have to use the touristy first class hermetically sealed "Glacier Express" cars. There are frequent local trains which go over the same track, just as fast, and you could go back that way. You may have to change, but for me that would not be any problem for me as the scenery is fabulous.
Maybe it'll be quicker to go back via Bern and the Loestchberg tunnel.
The St. Mortiz to Zermatt GE run takes about 8.0hrs. It also takes another 7.0+hrs to get back to St. Mortiz no matter which way you go - via Bern/Zurich/Chur or R/T on the Glacier Express. Most likely, you will need to overnight somewhere near Zermatt and then get an early start the next mornng.
The next logical question would be: Do you really need a car while traveling through Switzerland? If not you'll really be doing yourself a favor by leaving it behind.
Hi Gabriele, I don't understand the need for a car to travel in Switzerland either. We took the Glacier Express from St. Moritz to Zermatt. It was a very long day for us, just over 9 hours. By the halfway point, we were really looking forward to just getting off the train. To do the trip twice in 2 days, I would actually dread it. Just my opinion. Paul
Could you perhaps drop off one car in Zermatt and pick up another one in St Moritz. If you call Autoeurope, they can tell you if that's possible.
We drive everywhere in Europe...except Switzerland! There is no need for a car because the trains are so easy, scenic and punctual. The Glacier Express is nice, but I would have dreaded going back the same way...long day!! I would say ditch the car. We went Zurich-Luzern-Berner Oberland-Zermatt-St Moritz-Bellagio and back to Zurich all by train with no problems at all. Get a Swiss Pass and just jump on the trains (make a reservation for GE, but that's all you need)
