Switzerland for 5 days in January

Flying into Milan, ending trip in Lugano.

Best place to ski for 4 days/3 nights? On a budget.

Interlaken? Zermatt? Any hotel recommendations in either, everything seems to be booked.

I have not skiied in Europe,, but , I have been to Zermatt and Interlaken. The words "budget" "skiing" and either of those two places do not belong together.

Zermatt is high season in winter, so forget about it if you are on a tight budget.
I do hope someone here can help,, but I also suggest you look at Lonely Planet forums as well as tripadvisor.com forums. Best luck.

"The words "budget" "skiing" and either of those two places do not belong together." The word "budget" applies to few things in Switzerland at all, especially skiing in the high season. The Italian Alps, although not cheap, are significantly less expensive than Switzerland. You can ski on the Italian side of the Matterhorn for about half the price.

If you're finding everything booked in the Interlaken area in January, you might be trying to book during the World Cup ski races in nearby Wengen. These are very famous and draw tens of thousands of spectators.

There are lots of resources for European ski vacations--guidebooks, websites, ski forums, etc. I'm not sure there are many skiers on this board that can advise you.

The chalets are likely all booked. Have you looked at hotels yet?
