Switzerland

We are a large family group of ten and desire a base city to see some of Switzerland. We would like to day trip and come back to the same place each night. We will be traveling by train and will stay a minimum of five nights. Thank you.

One of the towns in the Berner Oberland would be my suggestion. Either Lauterbrunnen, Wengen or Murren would be good choices. We stayed in Lauterbrunnen for a week and loved it. We rented an apartment, took the train or gondola each day to a different area of the BO. Could have stayed a couple more days and not run out of places to visit. RS has a great section on the BO in his book. He is generally really good with his suggestions. However I don't agree with his recommendations about Gimmelwald. I really didn't see why he is so infatuated with it.....

LeAnne, the Berner-Oberland is a great place to spend several days. You might want to look into the Chalet Fontana in Muerren. They have a very large family unit. Lots of hiking, possible bicycling and other activities. Day trips can be made to Brienz, Lucerne and even Zermatt to see the Matterhorn. But, some these day trips will involve a good 4 hours round trip. For the Matterhorn, you want to be there in the morning, as it often clouds up in the afternoon.

LeAnne, I agree with the previous suggestions that the Berner Oberland would be a good location to consider. It's somewhat in the "centre" of the country, and in addition to the sights in that area, there are also a number of interesting sightseeing locations nearby (ie: Lucerne, Bern). If you're planning on doing a lot of travelling, it would probably be better to stay in either Lauterbrunnen or perhaps even Interlaken. Staying up in the mountains (ie: Mürren) would be nice but will add to your daily travel times. With a group of ten I would suggest getting accommodations booked WELL in advance of your trip! You may have to split the group between two hotels (which is not really a bad option) or perhaps find a large apartment. When will this trip be taking place? Happy travels!
