Switzerland - Bern to Berner Oberland/Jungfrouch area

We have a friend in Bern and can stay for free while we're in Switzerland. Was wondering how doable is it to go from Bern to the Berner Oberland area...especially up to the 'Top of Europe' and Shilthorn, etc.. Is it ok to stay in Bern and go to OB for a day to see one thing, then come back to Bern and go back to OB a second day to catch up on other areas? Can we drive back and forth or are trains better? Just trying to save money since we can stay for free! (though maybe the trains/car would negate that)
Thanks!

It's doable, Bern to Interlaken (the gateway city for the region) is only one hour away. Make sure you get an early start and take the first train of the morning as visibility at the Schiltorn/Jungrau is best at that hour. You're better off sticking to trains as cars aren't permitted past Lauterbrunnen or Grindlewald. You can check schedules for Bern to the peaks at the Swiss Rail site:

www.rail.ch

Simply type "Schiltorn" or "Jungfrau" as your destination.
