I am taking a tour in Switzerland in june 2011 and the tour begins in Montreux and ends in Lucerne. The tour company is giving me 2 free hotel stays and plan to use one night in Lucerne. Would it be worth it to use the other free night in Montreux or just use the 2 nights in Lucerne.
Byron, I can't be sure of the planned route but the Golden Pass scenic train runs from Montreux to Lucerne. One suggestion is to spend the 2nd night in Interlaken. I'm not sure how much time you have from when the train [INVALID]s you off until you need to re-board, but from the Interlaken Ost train station (there are two in Interlaken) you can take the 25-minute train ride into Lauterbrunnen and catch views of the alps that you cannot see from Interlaken. With a little more time, you can take the cable way and cog train to Murren. It just depends on how much time you have.
Byron: You don't need to pay for a "tour" in Switzerland. It's a stunning country almost everywhere you look. Hop on the train and do it yourself. It's really quite easy.
I would stay 2 nights in Lucerne as there is more to do there than Montreux. Take Cog railway, see covered painted bridge, see the sleeping Lion memorial(very emotional), cruise the lake etc. I was in both last yr and had a great time.
Thank you my first choice was to spend the 2 extra free nights in Lucerne and then go to Paris for the weekend where my son works. The reason I chose a tour was my wife has had 3 shoulder surgeries, one elbow surgery and has a hard time with her luggage as she has develped chronic regional pain syndrome.
I have been to a conference in Interlaken in 1999 and loved the area.
