Switzerland, Austria in September

Thinking of Swiss, Austrian, Czech trip in September. Considering Geneva, Bern, Zurich, Zermatt,
Lucerne, Lausanne, Zermatt, Saltzburg, Vienna, and Prague. Probably should eliminate several Swiss locales. Suggestions? Do transportation issues to Zermatt make it a top candidate for elimination? I think I have seen others consider Insbruck and others say it should be low priority.

Hi David,

You don't say how much time you have and where you are flying into/out of. These answers would really help for giving good advice.

Zermatt... it depends on your route. Having been to both Zermatt and Wengen (BO), if I had to choose just one, it would be Wengen and the BO.

Innsbruck... While I (we) love the Innsbruck area, we're not crazy about Innsbruck itself. There are many alternatives to staying in the city of Innsbruck itself. Our favorite is Hall in Tirol. Mittenwald, Germany is also less than an hour from Innsbruck.

Hi again David,

Perry, your post reminded me that in 1992 we stayed in Hungerburg at the Pension Alpina. Wow, I'm losing it.

Hungerburg is small, but the views over Innsbruck and the Alps are stunning. It's also the "starting point" for the Nordkettenbahn.

The trip should last 3 weeks. I am planning on flying into Switzerland, probably Geneva and home from Prague.

You are very "heavy" on cities in Switzerland. September can be a beautiful month in Switzerland, but much of Switzeland's charm is in its countryside. If I were gong on this trip, I would cut back on cities and plan on spending some time in the Berner Oberland or Zermatt. Zermatt is pretty easy to get to by train, but the Berner Oberland is even easier. I've been to both (enjoyed both) but If I had to choose one it would be the Berner Oberland. I certainly would not cut Zermatt from your current list as it is the one "non city" area you are going to. Innsbruck is in a beautiful area-but if you have no way to get out into the countryside, I would stick with Salzburg. You might consider stopping in Melk for visit. We were there last September and it was a great time to take a boat or bike tour down the Danube- the Wacahu area if full of ripe vineyards this time of year and beautiful. Could be a nice stop (a small Austrian village) between larger cities. Have a great trip.
