Switzerland, Austria, Bavaria

Am planning a 7 DAY trip with daughter to the above and am trying to decide between train or car. Any suggestions as to key sites to visit?

Hi Tim,
All depends on where you're starting from. Can't give you any advice without that info, except that with 7 days, I'd concentrate on just one of the above area's.

For Switzerland, I would do a train just because it is faster and you can see more of the country that way. Switzerland is beautiful, lots of vineyards, and rolling hills and mountains, and I was there for three days. The matterhorn is an all day trip if you do it. Bern is a must see.
All I saw of Austria was Vienna and I highly recommend it. Such a beatiful city. I agree with the last post as to concentrate on a smaller area. Travel time between the places also cuts into your time, remember.

Agree w/ other posters - limit your travel radius. Bavaria has lots to see. For a Bavarian vacation, you could possibly include Salzburg - adjacent to Bavaria, near Berchtesgaden - and maybe Hallstatt, which isn't far either. Vienna is quite a distance and takes a lot of time.

In a week's time, you might be able to see Munich, Garmisch, Salzburg, Hallstatt, and Berchtesgaden, with the proper planning. For this itin, I'd suggest spending 3-4 days in Munich, including a daytrip to Garmisch by train. You could take the train to Salzburg for 3 days and daytrip from there to Hallstatt and/or Berchtesgaden, depending on your interests. A car is handy for Berchtesgaden if you plan to go to the Koenigssee - but I think I'd do everything else by train. A Bayern Ticket (27 Euros) gets you and daughter around Bavaria for a day on the RE and RB (regional) trains for trips to Garmisch and Berchtesgaden; Salzburg is included as well. Purchase regular tickets for salzburg-Hallstatt.
