My husband and I are planning for two weeks in Switzerland at the end of next month and are looking for suggestions for 4 nights we have between stays in Appenzell and Interlaken. We are considering making our way from Appenzell down to Lugano via the Bernina Express and then taking the William Tell Express to Luzern on our way up to Interlaken. The 9 hour Bernina Express seems like a bit of a challenge though. Please send any tips on this route or suggest others. Thanks!
Ooo! Austin! Was born there and it is still probably my fav city in Texas! One VERY important thing to remember is that the Bernina Express actually only goes as far south as the Swiss/Italian border where it stops in Tirano, Italy. From there you actually take a PostBus to Lugano. Don't let this dissuade you, though. It is a beautiful train ride, even for the length of the ride. I would recommend that you take the train from Appenzell to Davos and spend the night there before continuing on the Bernina Express. That will break up the length of the train rides into more bearable amounts of time (the ride from Davos to Tirano is about four hours if I remember correctly. I think your only concern would be if the weather is garbage, it'll limit the view, but you can't do anything with that, so why worry! Overall, though, it is a STUNNING train ride!
