Switzerland after Christmas

We are considering traveling to Switzerland the week after Christmas. We would be flying from Portland, Oregon and meeting someone that would possibly train from Germany. We are very interested in seeing the Alps. Should we fly into Zurich? Is there a town that someone suggests that we could train to from a city that we could fly into? We would be interested in doing some skiing/outdoor activities.

The train station at Zurich airport is across the street in the basement of the parking garage. You can get anywhere in Switzerland from there. If you start your holiday about Jan 4, the resort lodging and lift prices will be the rock bottom lowest of the season. All the Christmas-New Year holiday makers will be clearing out and the hotel keepers will welcome you with open arms. It won't start picking up again until the end of January when the snow depth gets built up a bit more and in February, rolling school holidays will begin. There will be lots of choices, I'd say the higher elevation the better.
Zermatt is 3 1/2 hours away with just a single connection at Visp. Davos in 2 hr 40 min and 2 changes, Wengen in the Berner Oberland is 3 hr 10 min and 3 changes, and At Anton Austria is 2 hr 40 min and 1 change at Zurich Hbf.
