My daughter and I are planning a two week in 2010, but would like to know which month (June-September) to travel for hikes in the Bernese Alps, the Trift bridge in Gadmen, and the Matterhorn.
Early to mid September is ideal for hiking, but June is also a good month.
The Trift Brücke opens in mid-June so don't arrive too early or your will miss it. I think it opened on June 12 this year according to
I like early June to see the wildflowers in full bloom in the alps. But, the trails could be muddy in places from the higher snow melt. Late August or early September would avoid most wet trails.
I've been to Muerren and Wengen several (3-5) times and it was always late May early June. One time there were smatterings of snow still in the villages, but nothing to worry over. I'm not a big hiker and most of my hikes were best described as walks, but I never saw anything that was too muddy to traverse.
Sammee, my dad and I hiked to the hut on the Matterhorn in early August,, it was FABOULOUS,,, we also did a few other hikes in the 3 days we spent in Zermatt. The trails were clear and dry,, but it can still have a nip in the air once you get up high enough..
My friend just returned from an early June visit to Wengen ,, and her pictures showed some snow covered patches on the hiking trails they took,, but she said they were small and not too many..
