My family & I will be visiting Germany in June 2014. We plan on staying in the GaP/Füssen area (still working out details). We would like to visit Switzerland (day trip) but not sure exactly where we should go. I'm still very early in my planning process so this might be a question I could figure out if I was a patient person. But I'm not. So here I am at your mercy. : ) My family consists of myself and husband (both in our 40s) and our 2 kids (18 & 20). We are an active family who enjoy being outdoors and history. And we like to eat. So if you have just a few hours to spend in Switzerland, where would YOU go? Thanks!!
If you are just dipping into Switzerland for the day from Fuessen, I would go to Appenzell. It's one of the closest areas to where you will be, and is a very traditional area, meaning they will have lots of Swiss cows, festivals celebrating Swiss cows with Alpenhorns and cow bells, and traditional foods (cheese made from Swiss cows). Disclaimer: I haven't been there myself yet, but my daughter was an exchange student in Switzerland this year and visited there three times from the opposite end of the country, so she clearly thinks it's worth visiting. We're headed over next week to let her show us all her favorite spots, and Appenzell is on the list. Three years ago, we were staying on Lake Constance and also did a day trip to Switzerland just to say we had. Since we were at the other end of the lake than you will be, we spent an afternoon in Schaffhausen and thoroughly enjoyed it. Found the food a lot more expensive than the German side though. Also, Lindau is directly on your route to or from Appenzell and is definitely worth a stop and a stroll (though it's in Germany, not Switzerland.)
Nelly, Thank you for responding! I'll check out the other places you suggested as well.
