Can someone help me understand the differences between the first and second class on Swiss trains? And if I buy a pass/flexpass for 3 days can I use it for more than that?
Just returned from a trip including Swiss Rail.
We traveled 2nd class and I would say that 2nd is fine and 1st is way OTT ( Over The Top) for most people.
Save the money for something else.
I agree with Bill. You really don't need 1st class. As for what you can do with the Swiss Flexi-Pass, CLICK HERE to see full info on the pass. You actually can do quite a bit more between the first and last validated days.
I agree 2nd class is just fine. Unlike the two Italian trains I rode, 2nd class does have A/C.
Thank you to all who have replied to my questions. You have been most helpful.

2ND class is just fine. We were in Switzerland for 10 days last June. Bought the train pass and rode them everday. Clean and on TIME always. FORGET the 1st class stuff.
When we were in Switzerland we got the first chass train pass. The first class cars were nice but if we go again we will probably get the second class to save money. There is only a couple things that make me not sure. We had one trip on the bus. It was allmost full. The driver gave us the front seat. We also rode on several boats. If you have second class, you have to set at the back part of the boat. I really like to ride up front. Small things for most, but, something to think about. You will have a good trip either way.
Donald's comments about boats has merit. We found the second class portions of boat very crowded and sometimes standing room only while first class was fairly empty -- BUT you can always pay a small fee to upgrade to first class for that boat. Or it may be a small bribe to the ticket checker. In Italy that would probably be true but not with the Swiss. But second class train is great.
On Swiss boats the 1st class is upstairs, 2nd class on is on the main level where everyone boards or disembarks.
