Swiss pass question Hopefully my final transportation post before our departure. Four of us will be arriving Zurich on October 5,2012 and two arriving on October 6. We will be doing as much traveling by train as possible so for that reason we are looking at buying the SwissPass two for one deal. Our thought was to buy two 4 day passes each. So I guess in essence we would each do our own buy one get one giving us 8 days for approximately $260.00 SfC. Here is the question does this seem like a good plan? To further explain we will be in Switzerland a full 7 days. Then will head to Austria for 5 days then over to Cinque Terre for 3 days and back to Zurich to head home. I do understand that the trip up Jungfrau is only discounted but think most of our other travel will be covered. If this is a good plan can we wait until arrival at Zurich Airport to purchase the two for one deal. Looking forward to your suggestions.
According to the Swiss Travel Systems website, the 2 for 1 deal is available in Switzerland at most train stations: http://www.swisstravelsystem.com/en/specials-en/2for1-swiss-pass.html
My only suggestion is that someone in your group costs the trips you think you may take then you can see if the Swiss Pass is cost effective, if not look at the Half Fare Pass (110chf for one month) My personal preference is the Swiss Pass because it covers you for travel in many of the towns (local buses) and enables you to change your plans after you have started your journey. The Jungfrau trip is free as far as Wengen then you get 25% discount from there to the top and back which ever route you take.
Just got back from 10 days over there. Bought a Swiss Flexi-pass because there are side trips that cost very little, therefore did not use all four days at once. Some transport is discounted but not entirely covered by Flexi pass. Something we learned this trip (#7) was that our hotel in Basel and our BnB in Interlaken gave us a pass for free transport around their city. Not bad. We compared the daily cost of the pass against the trips out of the city. Try comparing by using the Swiss rail site. Very easy.
