swiss rail passes

Planning 11 day trip in Sept 2012 to Berner Oberland. Need the best pass for 2 people to take train from Zurich airport to Interlaken, to Grindalwald and return to airport or Zurich. Must also cover buses, trams, zug etc. to Jungfraujoch, Lauerrbrunnen and other mountains and hikung sites with 50% discounts. Possibly train trip or two to other part of Switzerland but unlikely unless it was included in the above.

If you are going in September it is hard to beat the 2-for-one "Fall special" offered on the 4-day Flex pass. You will get two passes for a total of $284 ($142 each person). You can read about it and buy it on this website under "Railpasses." A 4-Day Flex will give you your journey from the airport to Grindelwald and back to Grindelwald (fully covered, first and last day of your trip), plus two more fully covered days. Use them on your most expenseive days of travel. All the rest is 50% off, including lake boats, Postbuses, mountain cablecars and gondolas, whether a covered day or not. Exception is the Jungfraujoch which is only 25% off above Grindelwald or Wengen.

That is great and thank you for taking the time. My concern was that the 4 days were consecutive. I wii check it out.

Hi Joe-a Swiss Pass is consecutive days and a Flex Pass is not-it is the "choose your own adventure" type, i.e. pick the days you want to use it (the pass has 4 little boxes where you write in the date, and you don't have to do that until you are ready to board the first train or boat of the day).. Only restriction is the 50% reduction is only between the first and lasat days you use "covered days" on the pass. That is, you can't go from Zurich to Lucerne, say, for 50% and then the next day go from Lucerne to Interlaken. The 50% part starts only after you use up Day 1 of yor pass. The 2-for=1 is such a good deal I wish we had time to go back to Switzerland this September.
