Swiss Pass Worth It?

We will be spending 6 days in Switzerland, traveling by car. 3 days in Lauterbrunnen and 3 days in Zermatt. Wwe want to travel to all the sights in Lauterbrunnen and in Zermatt do the Matteerhorn and the Gornergrat. Our travel days are the first week of May. Is it worthwhile to purchase the pass or just buy individual tickets? I'm not sure of the savings.

Hi Deborah,

First, these are our two favorite area's in Switzerland. Enjoy!!!

Second, I have a question... Do you need to have a car? A car will be worthless in the two places (area's) you are visiting. Outside of Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald, all the villages (Wengen, Muerren, Gimmelwald, Kleine Scheidegg, etc.) are not reachable by car. Your car will most likely spend the entire time in a car park (pay lot) in Lauterbrunnen.
Visiting Zermatt, your car will be parked down in the valley in Täsch (in another pay lot) for the time your there also.

That's a 6 day rental for one day of driving between the two areas (parking lots).

I'd go with the Swiss Pass for your trip.

Check www.swisstravelsystem.ch/en/ and compare a Pass with a rental car, parking fees and train tickets.

Exactly correct - when in Switzerland use the fantastic public transportation! Yes, a car will definitely be useless in the areas you want to visit.

Also any form of Swiss Pass will probably pay for itself because of the big discounts you will get when you go on the private railways to the Jungfrau and to the Gornergrat. Those are pricey journies and a Swiss Pass will get you a hefty discount.

Thank you for your suggestions. We will be spending a month in Europe and we are going through Switzerland on our way from Italy to France so I think we'd need to keep the car rather than turn in pay the drop off and then get another and pay another drop off.
So the Swiss pass sounds like a must. Since we are leaving on April 24th I don't have enough time to order it. It's my understandning that you can buy one in the train stations.

Deborah,

I had a car in Switzerland and just parked it at the hotel. We bought our swiss pass from Rick's website and it did save us lots of $$$. We did drive to Lucern one day, but it is a pain finding parking so the train is a good option. We bought the 4 day flexi pass for a week stay in Grindelwald. We could of just bought a 3 day pass because every other day that you don't use the pass you get 50% off. It saves on Steamers and museums too. I think you need to buy it in the U.S.A. before you leave. Have a great trip and check it out on Rick's website.

You can buy it at any manned railway station in Switzerland.

Do days on which the 50% discount is used for rides above Muerren count as days on the flexi pass or is it just days where one chooses free rides. Does one have the option of riding free with the day counting on the pass or paying 50% and not having the day count?
