I noticed 8/1 is Swiss National Day and this web site mention closures. I'm planning a trip in CH and Italy 7/28-8/11. What should I expect if we were in Interlacken (or in the nearby towns) on 8/1? Right now on my itenierary we'd either be in Luzern or Interlacken on 8/1. Is there a place I should seek out on this day? Does it affect train schedules? Or should I plan on getting out of CH on this day (closures)?
I know someone who was staying in one of the mountain villages (either Wengen or Murren) on 8/1 a few years ago. He told me there were small-scale fireworks going on through out the evening, from all different directions throughout the valley. He said it was quite a sight. You can check the Swiss Rail site to see if there are any kind of transport issues. www.sbb.ch/en simply put Aug 1 as a travel date.
Hi Patrick,
I was there for last year's Swiss National Day, and fireworks pretty much seems to be the popular thing to do - everything from small ones set off by individuals in places like Gimmelwald to larger fares in the bigger cities.
Remarkably, the train schedule did not change one bit. I asked one of the locals in Gimmelwald, who said that nothing changed on Swiss National Day in terms of transportation - not the gondola, bus, nor the trains were affected other than the fact that not many people were on them.
