We leave Sept. 1 for 12 days. 2 couples, renting a car.

Fly to Munich drive to Hallstatt for 1 night
Venice- 2 nights, Varenna on Lake Como- 2 nights, Murren, Switzerland- 2 nights, Colmar, France- 2 nights, back to Munich and home.It works for us and may help with some ideas. We wanted higher elevations since it is hot where we are now.

Prioritize my friend. Make a list of the stuff in those countries you've always dreamed of seeing, NOT what you feel obligated to see - ie. if you hate congested cites, skip Rome and ignore the punk who says 'oh my goodness, you SKIPPED ROME?!?!' Your trip, your money, do what YOU want.

If you don't know what you want, a message board isn't going to help you figure that out. You need to buy some guidebooks or watch some travel shows to get your brain in dream mode.

Cars are good if you share the cost with others. Traveling alone and want to save $$$? Get a rail pass of some kind. See Rick's section on train passes, he's helpful.

If you travel alone, train is the most economical. You cannot afford the cost of auto rental or petrol.

Start by designing an itinerary worksheet with the dates down the left side and columns of activities across the top.

Allow time for each activity, including travel time, tour time, rest time and dining time.

Then you will know how to plan each day. 12 days is not enough time to see the important sights in each country.

Normal travel will consume 2 days for each city. That means you can effectively see only 6 cities.

Search google for the sights in each city you choose.

Assume your itinerary to be tentative and change it as you go.
