My partner and I were very impressed and were planning a trip that Rick recommended in Mürren. This trip included a funicular to get to Mürren. However the funicular has been replaced with a Cable Car and a very steep one at that. My partner suffers from acrophobia so is there another way to get to Mürren? Or recommend another tour that includes Biking?
Joe
I'm not sure how severe your partner's acrophobia is, but the cable car is very large (much larger than I expected) holding probably 50+ people I think. It would be fairly easy to stay away from the windows and anchor yourself in the center of the car. I'm just throwing that out there, because I was nervous about the cable cars, kind of expecting something that held two or three people, so the size was reassuring to me.
You can get to Wengen, on the other side of Lauterbrunnen Valley, by train, no need for cable car. That might be a better option. It's also a pretty little town.
IMHO, the cable car up to Gimmelwald would be more nerve-wracking than the one up to Murren (technically Grutschalp, where you catch a train the rest of the way). The cable car to Gimmelwald doesn't seem to track up the side of the mountain, so it seems much further from land. Not sure how to describe that exactly, but my friend and I were much more nervous on that one the first time.
The gondola from Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp to get to Muerren stays very low to the ground. There are no shear cliffs like there are on the route to Gimmelwald.
The Gondola is very very big and spacious on the inside. Get your partner on the gondola, plant them in the middle, and close your eyes :-)
