Is it worth packing a bathing suit for the beaches on Lake Geneva? Is the water cold/ We will traveling there the second week of September.
When I touched the water in June it was like a cold mountain stream...but swimwear doesn't weight "that" much anyway so why not take it just in case?
This is the first time we've ever had a topic called "Swiss Beaches"! :)
Actually, although I can't comment specifically on Lake Geneva, many of the Alpine lakes have beaches, either man-made or natural, that attract bathers in the summer. I swam in the Eibsee under the Zugspitze, and the water was quite refreshing on a hot day. Early September is probably a great time. The weather will not have turned yet, the lakes will still be temperate from the summer warming, and crowds should be low.
File this directly under the last entry in "Swiss Navy". In all seriousness, I don't remember seeing anyone swiming in any of the lakes while we were in Switzerland. the water is pretty cold...but some hotels have pools...so do take your lightweight suit.
I was in Switzerland for a month this summer and there were many people swimming at the beaches. As for me, I thought it was too cold and happily sat on the grass and watched! Still...glad I had my bathing suit and would recommend bringing it!
There are swimming beaches on most Swiss lakes. The water is warm in the Wallersee (eastern CH) and I am sure you can find some temperate waters even in Geneva.
