Swiss Alps - Weather Forecast: Rain. Last minute suggestions??

I will be making my first trip to the swiss alps this week. I will be living in Wengen Wednesday night through Sunday morning. Unfortunately, the weather forecast predicts showers/heavy rain for most of my time there. Any strong suggestions? 1. I still want to do Jungfrau regardless of weather - is this a bad idea? I want to experience the train ride, see the glacier, etc. 2. Any suggestions for a glacier hike? Is it even possible from the B.O. side? 3. Someone suggested a Lake Brienz cruise ride, as well as a hike through Trümmelbach Falls. They said this was doable in the rain. Thoughts? Thank you!

I had a similar experience this weekend in Lech am Arlberg in Austria (got lucky with one good day). I won't lie, if it's raining heavily (like it was all day Saturday), there's not much to do in the mountains except read a good book, unless you don't mind getting very wet. 1) If it's raining in Wengen, it will likely be a wet snow on the top of the Jungfrau. You won't see much. 2) Would not suggest it during inclement weather, unless you really equip yourself well.

I'm traveling all the way from the States to the Alps...even if I won't see much, I'm still leaning towards going, just to go. Hopefully Friday will clear up a bit, but thursday weather seems terrible... Any other suggestions? Thank you.

Do it. In the sunshine it is a great experience. Overcast and rainy, you are still going to see something on the journey up. And who knows what you will and wont see when you are up there. Even if you just have a memorable meal in the restaurant/cafe at the top

We just returned from Switzerland and spent five nights in Wengen. We had only two decent weather days. Had previously done the Jungfrau so this trip we opted for the Schiltorn and it was sunny on the way up but cloudy at the top-no view. We did a half day trip to Bern and found it to be an interesting town. Did the Lake Brienze boat ride and visited Ballenburg Folk Village which was covered by our rail pass and found it to be worthwhile. The cow parade occurred on the first morning of our stay in Wengen and we loved it-two hundred or so cows were herded through the streets of Wengen (with all those bells jingling) on their way to higher pastures. We hiked on the two good days. The falls could be a good choice even if it is raining. Lucerne could be a day trip for you.

We also spent the last two weeks in Tyrolia and Bavaria with same spotty weather. Make a list of museums and castles you want to see. We skipped the Zugspitz because of the weather and the cost (over $100 us). Went up another high cable car (Karwendal) in Mittenwald and while it looked like it might be ok on the way up, huge clouds moved in and cloaked it in rain. I still have a couple of memories but was disappointed at the lack of view. I realize you're not going here, but the experience might be parallel IF you run into clouds. Hey! you might not! There's always hope!

Hi Allen. Just realized that you are in Wengen now -- in case you're still checking email wanted you to know that we had a similar situation last August: 4 days of rain, clouds and fog in Murren. Saw the Eiger for about 10 minutes when the clouds parted briefly. I did all of the family trip planning and was very disappointed -- I'd looked at way too many pictures of bright blue skies! But we ended up really enjoying our time there. We bought good rain gear and hiked in the rain and mud. Even in bad weather you are hiking through beautiful green mountains, cows are all over the place, and you can stop at alps and buy cheese. Definitely walk the Lauterbrunnen valley floor and visit the falls. If you don't have time in Luzern already on your itinerary I would suggest a day trip there. It is a beautiful train ride and your sightseeing there won't be affected by the weather. We did not go up to either the Jungfrau or the Schilthorn. Each has a web cam that we checked continually and it was always fogged in. But you can check the webcams (I bet you already are!) and then make a decision.

We were in Switzerland from june 5-17 and the day our tour was scheduled to visit the Jungfraujoch the weather was beautiful with hardly any clouds in the sky. Really enjoyed the train ride up and getting outside in the snow and taking some nice photographs. We were staying in Grindelwald and the views of the Eiger from our back terrace were great. On the day we left Grindelwald only part of the Eiger was visible.
In Zermatt the views of the Matterhorn was outstanding especially behind the catholic church by the river. On the train ride up to Gornergrat you could see the Matterhorn well however by the time we got off the train rain, snow, and fog covered the Matterhorn.

All, Thank you for the suggestions. I am in my second day at the alps now. Thursday was cloudy with occasional showers but we enjoyed it immensely. We walked did a casual hike in the valley, and then the falls, then murren, grimiwald, and schilthorn peak. It was definitely cloudy and foggy at times but there was intermittent blue skies and clear views!!! It was well worth it even with limited views for the experience. I will be going up to jungfrau today since the weather is clear then do a hike. Hang gliding tomorrow!
