We are staying in Kandersteg and wondered if it was possible to take a day trip to Zermatt. If that's too far should we stay in Visp or Brig? We understand Zermatt is a little touristy.
jane can't help with the transport issues but just want to say while yes, Zermatt is a bit touristy its still lovely and there are many nice day hikes from there.
It's about 2.5 hours each way by train. From Brig it is about 1:15.
Yes, it is touristy, but you don't go to Zermatt to visit the town... same could be said of any of the villages or towns in the the Berner Oberland. I have not yet seen another Alpine region as impressive as the Pennine Alps around Zermatt. Still, I don't like the idea of using one Alpine location as a base to visit another. The reason is because enjoying the Alps, more so than probably any other destination in Europe, is extremely weather dependent. And as written elsewhere, the weather can change very rapidly. You can easily waste a a few hours in transit, only to arrive to find your destination covered in clouds or soaked in rain.
