My teenage son will like to try surfing at the English Garden during our june trip to Munich. He is an experimented surfer at the beach. Is there any place where he may rent a surfing board and a suit at the park or at the city?
Right by the wave swell, there's a sign posted. Here's what the top of it reads: "Surfen und Baden Verboten". You probably don't need to know much German to understand what that means. Although there's people surfing there all the time, I doubt a surfing rental business could legally operate in the vicinity.
PS- The wording on the remainder of the sign: "Lebensgefahr wegen a.u. wassertechnischer Einbauten gefärhlicher Uferströmungen. Verwaltung des Englischer Garten München."
We were there in December and there was a line to use the limited space available. I am pretty that it would only be possible for one surf boarder at a time to be in the water. Here is a link that you can cut and paste:
Regards, Gary
I was in Munich last weekend and my wife and I stumbled onto this at the English Garden. There's nowhere in the park to rent anything. The surfers all looked like locals who were all very well outfitted for this sort of thing. Looked kind of hazardous to me but it was fun to watch.
Thank you all for replies. Our son may only watch as eveybody else.
I was there two weeks ago, and I didn't see much in the way of rentals either. It may be forbidden but it's pretty much a relaxed atmosphere. They really aren't trying to hide themselves. I'll bet your son could talk his way onto a board. The wetsuit is another story!
Local surfers can get a special exception from the bathing ban from the Bavarian park administration after they sign a liability waiver. So not all surfers there are necessarily illegal.
And remember that the "Lebensgefahr" (mortal danger) on the sign isn't hyperbole: there were, I thing, ten deadly accidents at the Eisbach the last eight years or so.
