Sunday in Paris...

So, for my upcoming trip, one week away, I have been reading that Sunday in Paris is very slow. Is there little to do or see? What can I expect be open/closed? (Times if you know would help.) Thank you so much for your help and time.

Have spent a lot of my life in Paris and have never noticed Paris being slow on Sundays. Except there's not as many cars on the roads. There's always lots to do. I believe most, if not all, the tourist sites are open. One of the things I love about Paris is that there is so much life going on outdoors. Walking all over is very enjoyable, the beautiful scenery, architecture, parks, cafes, street performers, shops, boats on the Seine, etc. Just walking and sitting in the Luxembourg Gardens is heaven.

Even if every museum, monument, and tourist attraction were closed tight as a drum (and that is not the case) there would be PLENTY to do, and MORE, in Paris. I can imagine a day that involves getting up and going to a cafe for a pain au chocolate and a cafe creme.... doing some people watching.... strolling down to the Seine for a wander.... taking a detour into the Marais... popping into a boulangerie for some bread, and a fromagerie for some cheese, and getting some wine, and having a leisurely early lunch on the Pont des Arts... heading over to the Tuileries for a stroll and watching the kiddies with their boats... checking out Notre Dame (from the outside if the line is killer).... popping into shops for a little window shopping.... hitting another cafe for a drink.... there are plenty of shops and cafes and restaurants open, the parks are open... However. Concrete information: SADLY, Galeries Lafayette is CLOSED on Sunday. Sigh. But the Louvre and the Musee d'Orsay are open on Sunday! The Eiffel Tower is open on Sunday. The Musee Carnavalet is open on Sunday. The Jeu de Paume is open on Sunday. The Musee des Beaux Arts de la Ville de Paris (I think!) a.k.a. the museum in the Petit Palais, is open on Sunday. Centre Georges Pompidou is open on Sunday. And - what Susan said. :D I don't think you will have any trouble filling a Sunday with tons of cool stuff. Happy travels!

And there are ONLY Sunday things to do (some I've done, some I haven't yet - not enough Sundays in the week): 1. 4.30 pm there is usually a free organ recital at Notre Dame Cathedral. It's usually a short program, 30-45 minutes, good to be 30 minutes early to get a seat. There is a Gregorian Chant Mass at about 10 am. 2. St. Eustache Church (Les Halles) has organ recitals at 5.30 pm, which I believe are free 3. St. Sulpice, from 11.30 to noon, between masses, there is a 30 minute organ concert. 4. Rue Mouffetard market is best on Sundays. Around noon, at the bottom of the street are accordian players and people sing in French and dance. 5. On Sunday the Parisians are out in force. The gardens are lovely, with locals picnicking, playing with their kids, sunbathing. 6. In the Marais quarter, some of the streets are closed to traffic, and there is a lively crowd.

The marais is a lively place on sunday since most stores/restaurants are closed on the sabbath. My favorite eating place L'as Du Fallafel is open on sunday. The Champs-E is a crowded place on sunday with most all the stores open for business.

Most touristy areas are open as usual on Sundays. You will find little difference vs a weekday. We live in a pretty residential area of the 17th and many of our markets and bakeries are open in the AM. There are some restaurants that are not open though. Museums are free on the first Sunday of every month. Agree with most posters that there is a ton to do in Paris on Sundays.
