Summer Weather in Germany, Switzerland ????

When I look at weather highs and lows, it seems to hover in the mid 70's in July. Can that be right? I thought it would be hot and I need help planning for clothing needs for our family. Can anyone tell me what an average July is like in Bavaria and Lauterbrunnen area during the summer? Thank you

Always be prepared for rain. We always carry a light weight sweater. We were in both places in June and July. The weather was always nice with rain here and there.

Last time we were in Bavaria in June it rained for a short while each day. No matter what it looked like, we knew we would have ( at least one) one -hour shower every day. Take umbrellas with you when you go out. Duck into museums or cafes when necessary. Dont "usually" need a sweater during the day

Of course weather changes all the time. When I was in Germany in July 2006 it was about 105 degrees. The heat wave was all across Europe. That weather lasted over a week. I was in the Black Forest and Bavaria during that time. After that it went from nice weather to cool, rainy
weather. Most places like stores, restaurants and other public places don't have AC.

We were in both places last June. In Fussen 6/20-6/23 it was cold, overcast and rainy (needed jackets and umbrellas to see all the sights). Then we were in Lauterbrunnen from 6/23-6/27 and had 70-80 degree gorgeous sunny weather. Shorts, tshirts and tank tops for that portion of the vacation. Even had sunshine at the Jungfrau, but still needed a jacket there.

This has been a rather warm, dry spring. I'm going to guess that if conditions continue on this trend, you can expect the temperatures to peak significanly higher than the average. But of course, if you will be in the Alps, always prepare for cooler, wetter temperatures. However, I don't live in Bavaria, but... James from Ansbach gets paid to forecast the weather, so perhaps he can enlighten you further.

We were in Murren last August 11-15 and we had clouds, rain and cool weather the entire time. No shorts and tank tops for us! The moral is - plan for any weather. Bring rain gear in case.

There is no real way to know the weather on any particular date. You can go with the averages, but they can sometimes be very off. My wife and I went to Switzerland in 2005 and it was 90+ every day we were in Bern (it cooled off when we went up into the Alps into Interlaken). Last summer I was in Austria, Bavaria, and Berlin - it was 99 the day I got to Berlin and didn't cool off much. It was in the high 80s when we were in Austria. It was never really in the "mid-70s" except right after sunrise and right before sunset. So the best bet is to be checking weather.com and try to pack accordingly when the forecasts are coming 10-14 days before your trip.

I just returned from two weeks in Austria, and my experience was that the sun can be very bright and hot in the mountains, so I wouldsay bring plenty of warm weather clothes and good sunscreen, with a lightweight hoodie or jacket for cooler or damp weather, that can happen unexpectedly.

We were there in June/July 2009 and experienced this: Rhine area: cold, windy, cloudy, were still cold in pants and 2 jackets. Munich: perfect, only 1 day with rain, and capris with a t-shirt and a light jacket at night Berlin: hot, wore shorts and a t-shirt everyday My advice, pack for rain, bring a jacket, hoodie/sweater, pants, and short/capris.

Well, yesterday it was 88°, today it poured down rain and is now 57°. They have already said this is the hottest and the dryest spring in Germany since 1893. We have had tons of sun, which has been lovely. Now we need rain. Pack for various temps. I have experienced sweltering Junes and also Junes where I had to wear a jacket every day. August the same thing. July is usually just plain warm to hot.
