We are traveling to Munich and Berlin next week (parents and two college students). Not having been to Germany for 15 years, do you feel shorts, t-shirts, and tennis shoes are appropriate or will they simply mark us as tourists? Thanks for your advice.
Well, currently you'd be chilly in shorts but the weather changes from day to day. Short shorts in the cities - not really. As to marking you as tourists? You'll be among hundreds. Just let good taste prevail. If it looks fine in Birmingham, it'll look ok in Europe. Just have a good time.
Hope you pack some socks to wear with your sandals, lol seriously , wear what you like in Germany, the Germans do.
You'll definitely be marked as tourists, but what's wrong with that since that's what you are? Take a jacket; those two cities aren't as warm as you'd think during the summer.
Have a great time! Berlin is my favorite city and Munich is a blast too.
Anyone paying attention (most won't) will know you're tourists no matter what you wear. Bring what you find appropriate to the weather and circumstance and don't worry about the rest.
An interesting point, is tourists always look like tourists, even if wearing exact same clothes. I live in Victoria BC.. we get lots of American tourists, and they wear exactly pretty much what we do,, same brands and styles etc( well we are not much for those sweat suits and t shirts some ladies wear with fake rhinestones on them , you know bejazzling or something, but most of our tourists are from Americas Pacfic Norhtwest and they dress normally, lol )
What sets a tourist apart here or abroad is a range of things. First, the family groups,, in your own home town do you walk around with your teenagers looking into shops and taking photos of each other, doubt that very much. Second, tourists "wander" ,, locals usually march along knowing exactly where they are going and not stopping to look at anything really . Then there is the whole camera around their neck/in their hands thing,, taking photos always makes one look like a tourist,, but why would that stop anyone! those of you who live in tourist visited towns can see for yourself that you can recoginize tourists easily, even if they are just from 100 miles away and your own country!
Sorry to go on, but forgot this, one thing you never see the locals teenagers in Europe wear much ,, is the super baggy hanging off your butt jeans. I have seen it in Paris a tiny bit, but that was in a particular neighborhood.. and a particular type of teen.... er , in other words, don't. My own son ASKED me to buy him some jeans when we were in Paris as he felt selfconsicious wearing the ones he had brought from home! ( they wear a more fitted narrower leg jean in much of western europe)
Next week? Of course you'll be wearing German football jerseys! ;-) Alternatively white T-Shirts, black shorty and any black-red-golden accessories... Thursday evening the streets will be empty (again) and everybody will be in pubs or on so-called "fan miles" to jointly watch the public broadcasts of the match from Warsaw. And of course Sunday night will be the same... So who is playing whom? Next Thursday is Germany vs. England (any Italians on here?) ;-) And Sunday will be the same as usual: Germany vs. Spain (any objections?)... As to your question: Wear just whatever you'd be wearing back home. Germany has become pretty relaxed..
Andreas, after England beat Italy this weekend they will be on form for bulldozing Germany too - don't spend too much money on those red black and gold things...
Nigel... only if they keep counting goals that never happened (Wembley) and don't credit those that actually were goals (like Ukraine's the other day) ;-) So are you having a delicious Gyros tonight ;-)?
We don't need no stinkin' goal line technology.
