spending two nights in Salzburg
Goldener Hirsch
So much depends on what you want/like. My favorite place in Salzburg is the Institute San Sebastian. It's a college dorm that is clean, quiet, cheap and very well run.
I think Goldener Hirsch is one of Rick's top recommendations.
Altstadthotel Weisse Taube in the historic center...www.weissetaube.at
We've stayed twice at the Elefant Hotel, just off the Getreidegasse and around the corner from the Mozart Haus. It's also a short walk to the cathedral.
I used Priceline.com to get two nights at the Renaissance Hotel in Salzburg for $75 per night for a room with two double beds (no brekfast included), but I do not recommend the hotel because of its location. The hotel itself is nice and comfy, but it is located near the Salzburg Bahnhof and IMHO, a little too far away from the center of town. The next time I go to Salzburg, I'll say somewhere in the center of town, even if I have to pay a little bit more!

Bob, don't forget to go to Tripadvisor.com and read the reveiws that people have posted on various places to stay.
You can sort by "most popular", price, etc.
We just stayed at hotel Wolf Dietrich....An awesome hotel right very close to Mirabell platz.
They had a terrific rate on expedia as well
We actually preferred staying across the river. Hotel Bergland.

It is about a 10 walk into town in a quiet residential area that contains a couple restaurants.

We stayed at Hotel Weisse Taube and it was right in the Altstadt. Great location and wonderful breakfast. Also, the room was quite spacious compared to most other hotels we stayed at in Europe... There was a 10% discount when we were there in 2007 with our Rick Steves book.
Is there a castle/youth hostel on a hill above Salzburg? I went to Salzburg with my two college friends during a monthlong trip in 1995. When we got to Salzburg, we tried to book it from a sort of traveler's assistance booth near the train station. Unfortunately, that particular hostel was full. I'm going to make advance reservations this time, but I don't remember the name of it now. I'm also wondering if families can sleep there. Any pointers?
