I will be staying in Munich with my husband in April and would like to know if anyone has any suggestions for a place to stay in the old center. Looking for a place that's not expensive but clean and includes a good breakfast.
Hi Lily
I've heard good things about The Platzl from a good friend of ours who lives in Germany. Great location (right near the Hofbrauhaus), reasonably priced, and clean. We're still considering it for a July visit. If you stay there, you'll have to let me know how it was!
Lily,
a lot of people here like Hotel Uhland (www.hotel-uhland.de) in Munich. It's in a good neighborhood and looks kind of like a mansion. There lowest prices look pretty good, but at other times, they could be pretty pricey.
Another place is Hotel Royal (www.hotel-royal.de). I understand the neighborhood is less desirable, but their prices look good.
Both of these places are near the Hauptbahnhof. Over by Marienplatz is a place called Blauer Bock that might be less expensive. There is another place nearby, I think it is call Viktualienmarkt.
Gary Mc might have some more suggestions. He likes a place out in Freising. It's near the airport but about 40 minutes into town.
I will tell you without any hesitation that the best place to stay in Munich fitting your description is Hotel Munchner Kindl (p.78 of the 2009 Rick Steves Germany Book). We have stayed there on both of our previous 2 trips to Munich and we will stay there again this year for Octoberfeast. They are friendly, the rooms are nice (and clean) and they are completely centrally located. You will not be disappointed (and breakfast is included). We love this place!
We stayed at the Hotel Uhland Dec 08. They are very nice folks, breakfast is delicious. Easy to get around..the dogs are cute also. Beautiful area
I've stayed at Pension Seibel:

Basic, reasonably priced accomodations, but they did have a nice breakfast spread. And it sits about a 100 feet from the Viktualienmarkt.
Stayed at the Hotel Ludwig with 23 family and friends. It is opposite the train station. Tourist class hotel. Not good but great breakfast.
My husband and I stayed at Hotel Am Viktualienmarkt (website: http://www.hotel-am-viktualienmarkt.de/index.php?lang=6) in October 2008, and absolutely loved it. This is one recoemmended by Rick Steves.
The location was perfect; right of the Viktualienmarkt and a very short walk from everything. Breakfast was included, and the staff was very friendly. Plus, it had charm!
