Suggestions for long CDG daytime layover

I arrive CDG 8:35 am and depart 5:00 pm. Wondering what others would do. Being a seasoned traveler who has visited Paris several times, I am conflicted. I love Paris and am not visiting this trip so I am tempted to try to "zip" in and visit a shop or two, grab a bite, and head back. On the other hand, with all the possibilities for complications, that seems less than desireable. What is there to do inside CDG? What would you do?

Hi Kathy, if plane arrives on time, and if you are checked through , so no luggage to deal with and boarding pass in hand, I would do it. I would take RER into St Michels, wander a bit around that area, it will be nice to see the Seine, Notre Dame and wander a bit in Latin Quarter before returning to St Michels for the RER back to CDG,, I would head back by 2 . It only gives you 4-4.5 hours but that would be better then 4 hours at Cdg.. lol I would not do this if you are travelling with kids or elderly, or if I had to deal with luggage.

this also assumes you are not one of those who have to deal with filing for a VAT refund, that seems to waste alot of time.

Thanks for the suggestion(s), Pat. I am really asking "what would you do" to other travelers which is how you responded. I will be traveling alone (meeting up at final destination) and will have bag checked through plus boarding pass in hand. Haven't asked for a VAT refund since 1985. Don't buy that much. Anyone else have suggestions including what is available within CDG if I decide to stay put. Again, just wondering. I could be perfectly content to "veg" at the airport (well, I could handle it if necessary).

Kathy, If it were me, given the fact that you are quite familiar with Paris, I would totally go to Paris for 4 hours or so. I have the same situation as you except it is JFK airport. I am still uncertain whether to make it into Midtown Manhatten or chill at the Delta Lounge at $50 a pop. I have not travelled to Paris yet and so am not helpful in giving suggestions but I would totally do it. Linda

I would definately take the RER and see some sights. The subway system connects easliy with the RER trains and you would have enough time to see a couple of things before returning to the airport. Having spent too many hours waiting in airports over the years a little time in Paris would be delightful.
