Suggestions for day trips (4-8 hrs) from Dusseldorf??

I will be staying in a small town near Dusseldorf (Wegberg)in the latter half of September. Of course, I'm going to hit all the hot spots recommended in RS guidebooks. I'm not finding too much about the area I'm going to be staying in. I'm interested in some things I can do while the friend I'm staying with, is at work. I'm thiking of maybe taking a little jaunt over to Belgium or Holland. Is the train system difficult when changing countries?? Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! Janice

P.S. THANK YOU, Rick Steves for paving the way. You have opened up Europe for so many people. You're AWESOME!!!

To me one of the greatest sights outside of Düsseldorf is Dyck castle and gardens. It's a perfect half-day trip. The gardens are set up in a way so that they're actually both art and nature. The castle, surrounded by water, is lovely and impressive. It does take a few hours to comprehend everything. Very well worth an afternoon. http://www.stiftung-schloss-dyck.de/

A very enjoyable place to visit is the Netherlands Open Air Museum in Arnhem. Arnhem is only about 1 hour away from Dusseldorf on the train. The train system is very easy. In fact quite often you don't even realize that you have crossed the border. Make sure you have your passport with you. The museum is easily accessed by the local bus. If you go to the web site www.openairmuseum.nl and go to the english version all the details are there. I visited the museum a few years ago and found it charming.I find that part of The Netherlands (the province of Gelderland) wonderful, but then my roots are there and so are all the relatives. English is widely spoken in The Netherlands.
