Suggestions for best stop in Austrian Alps

Does anyone have suggestions for great alpine towns near Innsbruck, Austria? I will be leaving Cinque Terre and really wanted to go to Gimmelwald, Switzerland but I don't think I have the time for it. I will be traveling by train but still would love to see the Alps on my way to Rothenburg, Germany. I will be traveling in mid June. Any help would be very much appreciated!

Thanks

There are several villages similar to Gimmelwald (but accessible by car) in the mountains surrounding Innsbruck. I can't remember which ones have lodging and I can't find the promotional literature I got from the Hall in Tyrol TI, although I visited a few of them. Look at Innsbruck on Google maps and trying finding information on some of the nearby villages (Arzl, Rum, Aldrans, Thaur, Absam, etc.)

Hi Tom,

I have to tell you that nothing will be "like" Gimmelwald. It's a car free village on a perch overlooking... well you know.

As for Alpine towns and villages by Innsbruck, I'd have to say Mittenwald, Germany. Simply a postcard perfect Bavarian village surrounded by mountains. Very convenient by train as the station is an easy 5 minute walk to the charming pedestrian zone.

We love Hall in Tirol also. Again, very convenient by train is just 5 minutes to the beautiful old town and just a few minutes walk to the Gasthof Badl, which we've stayed at 3 times in the last 7 years.

If interested, we have photo's of both places at:

Hope this helps.

Sorry! I meant to say hi David. Hi Tom also, though!

I would suggest somewhere in either the Zillertal or Stubaital. Both are easily by train and bus from Innsbruck.

"I have to tell you that nothing will be "like" Gimmelwald. It's a car free village on a perch overlooking... well you know." But having been to both, I can tell you that they are similar. Other than being inaccessible by car, Gimmelwald is not quite as unique as Rick claims.

Sorry about that Tom. I didn't mean in anyway to say there weren't beautiful area's in Austria, etc. We went to Switzerland just one time and on that trip spent 4 nights in the BO based in Wengen. While the scenery in the BO is spectacular, we've found many places that we love in Bavaria, Austria and the Dolomites that we consider to be spectacular also.
I suggested Hall in Tirol and Mittenwald because the towns are charming, the alpine scenery is beautiful and both are convenient by traveling by train alone.

Zell am See and Kaprun. Close to each other and beautiful. A lot of pensions. No need to book ahead.

Thank you all very much for these suggestions. I'm going to look into them.

Paul, Your pictures are great and help me get a visual feel for many of the places I plan on visiting.

Thanks again!
