Suggestions for a SUNDAY arrival in Amsterdam

We arrive at Schipol on a Sunday around 2 PM, and will be staying at a B&B in Haarlem. But I understand that nothing is open in Haarlem on Sundays. So, do we leave bags at the airport and go into Amsterdam for the afternoon-evening and return to get bags and then go to Haarlem, or go check into our lodgings first and then go to Amsterdam? What's doable in A'dam on Sundays? Oh, and it's a Sunday in September, not this coming Sunday!!

Karen, i think you probably want to go from schipol to haarlem, drop off bags at your hotel/check in, then go to amsterdam. Haarelm to amsterdam looks to be a pretty short train ride and it will save you the hassle of having to go all the way back to schipol later.

I'm flying out on Tues the 7th (non stop, cheap, direct flight from seatac! ya bad economy!) and can let you know whats the haps in amsterdam on sundays (although my sunday will be a little different, as its easter).

Holidays aside, i had already counted Sunday as a low-key, hang out type of day anyway. I figured worse case scenario, everything is closed and i'll keep myself busy at various coffeeshops, vondelpark, museumplein, canal cruises, etc.

You arrive at Schipol at 2 PM, have to go through customs/passport control, pick up luggage (if you checked any)and then get to Haarlem and the B&B. That would probably get you to Haarlem about 5/6 PM? What is the latest check in time for the B&B?

I would make this a jetlag day. That is, get checked into B&B, plan where to eat for dinner, walk around Haarlem until dinner time, eat and get to sleep so you can be up and running the next day.

But it is all dependent on how you handle jetlag.

Has anyone been in Haarlem on a Sunday? When a traveler says "don't go on a Sunday, nothing is open" does that mean NOTHING? or will there still be places to eat?

There is a direct bus #300 that goes from Schiphol to Haarlem in about 40 minutes, leaves 4 times an hour. More sights are closed in Haarlem on Mondays than on Sundays, except the church. The train to Amsterdam takes about 20 minutes from Haarlem if you decide to go there.

In looking at the list I have of places to eat in Haarlem, I only see three that are closed on Sundays.
