Suggestion for a month in Europe

Hi all, We (2 pax) have booked our return tickets to Paris. Arriving on 18th Aug 2011 / 9am and departing from Paris on 16th Sept 2011 / 10.30 am. We're planning to see a bit of Europe in that span of time we have. TOTAL BUDGET: 2400Euros per head (excluding the return flight ticket to Paris and accomodation in the UK for 7 days) Anyway back to my point, on the day we fly into Paris, we plan to head to the UK for a week right after breakfast. We have the places to see in the UK confirmed and I require some advice on the others. The list we have is as follows: (please ignore suggestion for UK, we've sorted that out) 18th Aug - 24/25th Aug : UK
Followed by: Prague & Vienna/Salzburg -> Italy (Rome, Venice, Florence) -> Spain (Barcelona, undecided on others) & Portugal (undecided) -> France (Paris, undecided on others) The problem is I've been doing tonnes of research on distance/transportation/timeline/places to see and I'm getting extremely confused. As you can tell, I'm highly undecided. I don't mean to just receive answers and feedback without making any effort to narrow down further but if I can get some input on whether these places are feasible in the timespan I have, best way to commute, or there are other places I should visit and get rid of something in this list (if strategically connected due to time factors), I will then be able to take them into consideration and refine the plan. We're still flexible with other locations although if what I've listed above are do-able, then I'm hoping to get some input on how many days we should spend in each location because it is somehow much harder than I thought to plan when i'm spoilt for choices :( Thank you.

With your budget and time frame, you may have a few too many destinations that are quite far from each other. The easiest way to do this is spread out a map of Europe and pinpoint all your destinations that you think you want to visit. Then price the transportation costs and the time it takes to get to each of them. Then you will have a better idea of how long you will be able to spend in each city. Right now, it looks like you want to visit 9 cities or countries in about 20 days. This leaves you perhaps 2 days for each place, minus the transportation times. Consider cutting your list down some. Perhaps only 3 countries with various cities in each country.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm thinking of striking off Portugal and either Czech or Austria or all three. Or Keep either Salzburg OR Prague. I'm undecided about so it would be like: Prague -> Italy -> Spain -> France or Salzburg -> Italy -> Spain -> France or Prague -> Salzburg -> Italy -> Spain -> France in Italy: Rome, Venice, Florence in Spain: Barcelona
in France: Paris Kindly let me know if either of these is better and then I'll start refining them on exact places of interest within the specified location. Thanks.

Barcelona is a bit out of the way, nice but inconvenient. The rest seem to flow fairly reasonably. You need to do them in the most efficient way, though.

Hi Bavani! Use www.skyscanner.net to help you plan how best to include the cities you want that are not so close to each other. For example, I flew from Prague to Treviso (+ shuttle bus to Mestre for Venice) for less than $50. The tricks to the discount flights are the following: check alternate days, as many of these flights are not daily; check nearby airports, i.e. Treviso for Venice or Girona for Barcelona; and, travel light! Assuming the discount flights are still routing this way: London-Prague Prague - Treviso (for Venice) train: Venice-Florence-Rome Rome-Barcelona (or Girona)
train into France (i.e. to Perpignan) ??? rental car to explore the Dordogne and the Loire You would not need a railpass, just point-to-point tickets, unless you plan on traveling only by train in France for the last week, then I would consider a France-Italy Pass (but still fly from Rome to BCN). I'd skip Portugal, but include Salzburg, if you can find an appropriate transportation option. Good luck!

Barcelona is REALLY out of the way. Prague/Vienna/Salzburg makes a reasonable choice as far as distance from each other. From Salzburg, going down to Italy isn't that unreasonable. I'd look at cheap airfares between the UK and Prague, then again from Rome to Paris, or elsewhere in France then on to Paris. Although, with doing only 2-3 days in each city between Prague and Italy, spending a week in Paris to relax and doing some day trips from there wouldn't be a bad idea, either.

I have to disagree, Barcelona is not really far if you fly direct... Think of it as going to Australia and flying to Perth -- worthwhile if you want to visit Perth while there.

Thanks to everyone for your kind suggestion. I have refined my plan as follows, but it needs morr work: London > fly to Prague (3days) > Salzburg/Vienna (3 days) > Italy > (9days) > fly to Spain (4 days) > France Been thinking of whether I should do Vienna and Salzburg or just pick one, I'm not much of a museum person, mainly prefer outdoors so scenic view is usually what I'm attracted to when I walk around places, that can be seen in building architecture, cultural events, people, etc. Still in the midst of researching but any suggestion will be appreciated. In Italy, still sticking to Rome, Venice and Florence. In spain, Barcelona but I'm thinking if I should omit Austria and spend more time exploring other parts of Spain if it isn't too far from Barcelona, and yes finally Paris. I'd also appreciate any suggestion on adding/cutting number of days if you think there are some specific places within these countries that I'm visiting that I should not miss that look different from the ones I've listed - I just absolutely love beautiful scenery resembling the history, art and cultural influences of the place. Yes I like lakes and nature too. Just not into modernization. Thank you.

Hi Bavani. Have you been to any of these countries before? If not, I'd stick to countries that are closer together and recommend about one country per week - UK, then Austria (Salzburg and Vienna), Italy (Venice, Florence, and Rome), and France (Paris and French countryside). Save Spain, Portugal, and Prague for another trip (or two).

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I have been so caught up with work and haven't been able to look into my trip planning much. Anyway we have drawn final conclusion that we're omitting Austria and Czech for this trip. So arriving in Paris on the 18th of Aug and off to the UK for a week. So on the we fly out to Rome and do Italy, next Spain and since we're flying out of Paris we'll do Paris for a few days and leave on the 16th if Sept. I am so sorry for being indecisive but this is the final conclusion and its all about going into specifics. How many days is recommended for each Italy and Spain based on my interest as stated above - all about pleasing my eyes. A bit of museums and galleries but I don't dig history all that much so I just appreciate architecture, color, culture, scenic views. Should I also do a day or two in Marseille or just save those days for Italy/Spain and just do about 3 days in Paris while saving more of Paris for the next trip? I would do a day in Disneyland and another day just the city for a bit and just maybe one more day for the city still. But I'm not sure if I should add a few days to Southern France or I should just use them in Italy/Spain. Tentatively the plan is such: 18th Aug - 25th Aug: UK 25th Aug -flying out of UK) - 3rd Sept : Italy 3rd Sept - 11th Sept : Spain 11th Sept - 15th Sept : France 16th Sept - Depart from Paris Appreciate all your advise, thank you. regards,
Bavani
