My husband and I are planning a trip to Portugal from September 21st to 29th. We will not be renting a car. Starting and leaving from Lisbon, can you suggest highlights of what we should see during our visit. Thanks! Arlynn
Good point. We'd like a combination of learning about the history, seeing the local sites/people, and relaxing a bit. We were thinking of possibly fitting in 3-4 places, including Lisbon. Your suggestions would be appreciated!

It might be more helpful if you give a few more details, such as what kinds of things you might be interested in seeing, how much time you'd like to spend driving vs. staying in one place, etc. Portugal is an amazing country with tons to see in any direction you go. Both buses and trains work well to get around. We visited last summer and fell in love with the Algarve region, particularly Salema and the Sagres area.
OK, let's start by being honest about how many days you have. You say your trip is "September 21st to 29th" - does that include days that you are arriving or departing? If so, don't count those. Either way, you have a maximum of 6-8 days. I would pick 3 places. Lisbon + 2 others that can be done easily without a car (that leaves out the Algarve).
One place that we liked, and that would seem to match your interests, was Coimbra. It's one of those sightseeing places where the whole city is "the sight" to see.
We also took a day trip from Coimbra to the Busaco Forest, which was fun, though perhaps not quite on point for you. Our whole trip on trains and buses. A guidebook is your planning friend.
Have fun!
Thanks! Any more suggestions anyone?
Hello Arlynn. I recommend : read the book "Rick Steves' Portugal".
